Life Style... Going to buy contact lenses?

May be you need contact lenses as a substitute for glasses or may be just for fashion. Whatever the reason is, some factors must be considered before buying contact lenses for your invaluable eyes.

Avoid eye infections:

All types of contact lenses lessen the amount of oxygen that reaches your cornea, the clear tissue that lies over the pupil and iris. This less oxygen can advance infections. So, wearing contact lenses enhance your risk of corneal infections. Here are some tips to avoid such risk:

• Follow your doctor's instructions to take care of your lenses.

• Use multipurpose lens solutions with care.

• Choose daily-wear contact lenses, and put them off before you go to sleep.

• Wash, rinse and dry your hands carefully before handling lenses.

• Do not use extended-wear contact lenses so often.

• Be sure your lens-care products are prepared for the nature of lenses you wear.

• Replace your lenses as suggested. If one or both lenses bother you before you are due to replace them, get them checked or try a new set.

Types of contact lenses and their comparisons:

Contact lenses, generally, fall into two main groups. They are soft contact lenses and gas-permeable contact lenses. Soft contact lenses are thin, gel-like lenses match to the shape of your eyes. They are more flexible than gas-permeable contact lenses. So soft contact lenses are more comfortable and easier to get used to. They have shorter adjustment period and stay in place in better. But soft contact lenses have disadvantages also. These include less durability, requirement of more frequent replacement. They are not as effective in correcting some vision problems.

Gas-permeable contact lenses are more durable and these can correct optimal vision problems for various conditions, need less frequent replacement, and also have more oxygen permeability. They are better for your eye health. But, even these lenses are not free of disadvantages. These are less comfortable and require adjustment period. They may slip off the center of eyes more easily and may lead the wearer to discomfort and unclear vision.

Fit your lenses perfectly:

Have a systematic eye-test by an experienced doctor if you decide to wear contact lenses. Follow-up examinations are important to observe any changes to your vision and to update it. For a regular contact lens wearer, it is essential to test the eyes annually. So know about your right lens and go for it.
